The Swindle is a Steampunk Cybercrime Caper about breaking into buildings, hacking their systems, stealing their cash, and quickly running away again before the police show up. All the properties you’ll be stealing from are procedurally-generated, so you’ll never get the same level twice. Back at your rickety airship up in Outer Space, you can modify your thief with new Skills, Tools, and all manner of advanced technological Horrors, allowing you to take on bigger buildings with better security, for gargantuan Rewards!
The idea is that you play yourself, up in your Airship, running your little Thieving Empire. The guys running around the levels are thieves for hire. If a thief dies or is caught, you hire a new one. The thieves are randomly generated as well, so when you’ve got a really cool-looking thief with a badass name and a load of experience, and they die on a heist, it’s completely gutting. Have you got what it takes to pull off The Swindle?
Is is a Roguelike?
It’s a bit like a Roguelike, but I’m still currently undecided as to how Roguelikelike it’ll be. At the moment, the game feels more like an RPG – you upgrade your thieves by buying upgrades. When they die, those upgrades stick with you. I suspect the game will be better if upgrades are cheaper, but you lose them if your thief dies. It’s one of the things I’m still working on, and will require a lot of testing.
So right now, no. It’s an RPG-alike. Eventually I suspect it’ll straddle a line between RPG and Roguelike. There’s no random perks, no chance pickups. But there is permadeath and procedurally-generated levels.
When I first announced The Swindle, I described it as “Sonic the Hedgehog crossed with Deus Ex” which still kind of hold true, but because of the procedural generation the new version feels more like “Spelunky crossed with Deus Ex”.
